Why I’m Proud to Be a Dog-Friendly Piano Technician
When you think of a Piano Technician's workday, you probably imagine the tools, the focus, and the precise art of bringing an instrument back into harmony. And while I truly love that part of my craft, there’s another, less technical aspect of my job that brings me immense joy: being a dog-friendly Piano Technician who gets to meet the incredible pups that call my clients' houses home.

A Warm Welcome at the Door
From the moment I ring the doorbell, the welcome committee often has four legs and a wagging tail. There’s nothing quite like being greeted at the door by an enthusiastic pup who’s just as curious about me and my tool case as I am about them. I always make sure to have a pocket stocked with meaty-flavored treats for these very special greeters; it’s the best way to make a new friend!
Once I get to work, their personalities really start to shine. I’ve come to know so many canine characters over the years.
The Vocalists and the Silent Partners
Some are my vocal accompanists. I call it having the "singing gene." The moment I strike a clear, high note during tuning, a soft howl joins in from the other room. It’s like they can’t help but be part of the music, adding their own unique voice to the symphony of strings. It never fails to make me smile.
Others are my silent supporters. They find the most peaceful spot in the house; which, more often than not, is right underneath the piano bench. As I work, I feel their calm presence, a quiet companion keeping me company through the process. There’s a comforting rhythm to hearing their gentle snores mixed with the sounds of tuning.

Wise Souls and Curious Pups
And then there are the wise old souls, the "grandmas and grandpas." I remember one particular Pug, a true gentlewoman with a graying muzzle, who would patiently wait for me to take a break just so she could amble over for a thorough ear scratch. Her calm dignity was a wonderful reminder to slow down and appreciate a quiet moment.
From energetic Australian Shepherds who watch my every move with intelligent interest to tiny puppies discovering the strange sounds of a piano for the very first time, each dog adds its own unique note to my day. They break the ice, provide comic relief, and offer unconditional friendship for the hour or two I’m in their home.
A Heartfelt Thank You
So, to all my clients: thank you for trusting me with your beautiful instruments. And a special thank you to your furry family members for always making me feel so welcome. Being a dog-friendly Piano Technician is, without a doubt, one of the best parts of this job.
Does your fur baby like to greet new friends? I always have a treat ready and would love to say hello during my visit.
