Have You Seen 'Tuner'? A Los Angeles Piano Technician’s Honest Review

If I had a nickel for every time a client asked if I’d seen the movie Tuner, I’d probably be able to retire from pulling apart grand actions! As a Los Angeles Piano Technician, my inbox and client appointments have been filled with questions about Hollywood’s latest crime thriller.
Everyone’s been asking if I’ve caught Tuner. So, let’s address it once and for all: Yes, I’ve seen it, and yes, I loved it.
It’s a fantastic story with stellar performances from Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman. They carry the film and keep you hooked from start to finish.
Did 'Tuner' Get It Right? A Los Angeles Piano Technician’s Take

Now, did the tuning scenes look 100% authentic to someone who spends their life knee-deep in tuning pins, strings, and regulation? Not quite.
For my fellow Tech nerds out there, a few cinematic details had me chuckling: zero felt mutes in sight to isolate unisons, no test intervals to check harmonics (apparently he sets a temperament by pure divine intervention!), and a lever technique that would stress out a pinblock in five minutes. Plus, anyone who tunes knows that if you don't set the pin with a solid test blow, that string is slipping out of pitch on the very first forte chord!
If we're being completely honest, his posture was a bit off, but here’s the thing: that wasn’t the point of the movie.
Ninety-nine percent of viewers aren't going to notice whether someone is setting a proper temperament or just making cinematic gestures with a tuning lever. It's a Hollywood thriller, not a masterclass in Piano Technology!
Safecracking vs. Piano Servicing
Watching it did briefly cross my mind: Hey, maybe pivoting to safecracking could be a lucrative alternate revenue stream? Drop a hammer, listen to the tumbler, crack a vault.
On second thought, no. I'm much happier sticking to standard pitch raises, regulating actions, and keeping my clients' instruments playing beautifully; all while staying on the right side of the law.
If you haven't checked out Tuner yet, it's definitely worth a watch. Just don't expect a step-by-step tutorial on how to service a Steinway!
